I recognize that this is a little off field from what we have been discussing here but recently it has occurred to me that I want the Minnesota Vikings to win the Super Bowl. Not because of any particular affinity I feel for the land that gave us Bob Dylan, Kevin McHale or it’s greatest export Jessica Biel, but because I’m pulling for Brett Farve.
It has become fashionable of late to bash Brett Farve, in much the same way it is de rigueur to bash Jay Leno (I’m looking at you, Tina Fey). People don’t like Farve because ESPN covers him too much. Really? If you gave this a moments consideration wouldn’t you see that your problem is with ESPN and not Farve.
As a sidebar, ESPN sucks. Reducing baseball to a home-run montage is tantamount to equating this with actually watching Pulp Fiction. If your issue is with the content of ESPN don’t cloud that with how you feel about a given athlete. Do you get mad at Obama for always being on CNN?
The point being that if one does consider one’s self a contrarian (which I do) then it is time to start rooting for Farve. Personally I am a mid-level contrarian. You know, that sweet spot of the demographic just below a “9/11 Truther” but still of the opinion that giving Al Gore a Nobel Prize for Global Warming is like giving one to the guy who invented “Y2K”. When hating Brett Farve becomes the default stance of society it is the obligation of the contrarian to start wearing a Vikings 4 jersey. Right?
The Vikings are 6-0 now and a lot of self-described contrarians are clicking their tongues and talking about this time last year (as well they should) but me, I’m putting on a purple shirt when I go to work today.
I’m not fully on the bandwagon…I work for FedEx.
